We like our native birds. There are two cats > that hang around here and they have on occasions killed a rosella. > We shoo them away but they come back Grrr. It is a well documented fact that most cats are infested with an insidious parasite. The parasite has no detrimental effect on the cat. It does however also infect rodents - a common prey of cats. The effect on the rodent is that the parasite paralyses part of the animal's brain, that associated with the fear response. As a result, when an infected rodent encounters a cat, the normal "run for your life" reflex is suppressed and naturally enuf the cat catches and eats the rodent .. and in the process the cat becomes infected with the parasite if it is not already infected. That would be yet another biological curio except for the fact that humans can also be infected by the parasite and like the rodents it infects, the parasite also suppresses part of the human brain. Since the human brain is a lot more complicated than that of the average rodent ... well the average human brain, that is .. the effect on the behaviour of the infected human is less clear cut, however studies have shown that there is an effect and MRI etc studies of infected human brains do show depressed function in a specific area. The one clear cut effect on human behaviour is that those infected by the parasites have, well, a high degree of attraction towards cats. This also shows the adaptability of the parasite - suppressing the fear response towards cats in humans serves no use (unless the cat is a lion or the like), but increasing the attraction of the infected human towards cats drastically increases the close interaction between the said human and the cat and serves as a means of passing on the parasite as the rodent vector. This is one of several fairly recently identified parasites that alters the host's behavioural pattern to benefit the parasite. Another parasite lays eggs in the host, when the eggs are ready to hatch the host is driven to enter water where it drowns and the hatched eggs are released into the water, where they thrive. So if you don't like cats ... you have a very good reason for it .. and you are also almost certainly not infected by this behaviour altering parasite. And if you love cats .. please don't introduce your parasite ridden monster to me!!! :) And before any cat lovers out there take me to task, the above is all legit and can be found perusing the science literature. Oh, and there is no known analogous parasite that infects canines. Just cats. I'm not really sure what they're up to but we (Edwina and I) advertise their wares every month in the Bullsheet so I could certainly ask. Personally I'd favour a venue closer to the city. Thoughts include: - Victorian Writers' Centre: it appears to be in the city but nor necessarily to have a room suitable for a seminar. - The gurus of sf in Melbourne - most notably Rose Mitchell who is co-chair of Aussiecon 4 but she's a classic case of "if you want a job done give it to a busy person". Also Rose might like to have the seminar advertised as an activity peripheral to the Worldcon. - I haven't got any more ideas crystallised yet but I'm sure that there are other options Melbourne is a busy, arty town (when they're not watching footy). - Herendil Jeff wrote: And did meet Dr Sarah.......(yesterday) > First the good news.......this venue would be Wunderbar for us....not only would the main room be the right size....much as I remembered ....but there is a beaut coffe/tea room just down one flight of stairs which we could use......and Dr S....is still for us! It was getting a bit too long. If you want to know what went before, you should find it in the archives. Surely "infidels" are non believers in Allah and The Prophet. If infidels are the converse of Muslims and gentiles the converse of Jews, what is the converse of Christians? I've heard pagans used that way but Pagan with a capital P is now regarded as something of a religion in its own right. As for living at number 666, while it is said to be the number of the Beast (in Revelation - er, and Heinlein), that doesn't disallow it from other uses. Regarding the use of She as a pronoun for God: some famous feminist was credited with "Pray to God, She'll help you" but I forget just who. Betty Archdale, one time headmistress of Abbotsleigh (girls') College, Sydney, was said to have admitted to occasionally commencing the Lord's Prayer in assembly (it was a Protestant school, I forget just which denomination) with "Our Mother". Has anyone ever implied that there is a right and a wrong pronoun for use with Almighty God? Is it then a sin to use any particular pronoun that an established Church regards as inappropriate? You yourself have written "would one wish to make an enemy of God by? renouncing him?" (lower case h). In regard to hiring of that hall: MSFC is probably almost pure atheist. That does make them infidels though. I must find out more about how they got to use it so much. However Jeff is doing a good job here - carry on. --- On Thu, 30/4/09, David Powell wrote: Quoting Jeff Lynch : > Yep I thought I saw a coupled of talents hidden away there! Well not mine ... Actually, despite popular belief, "infidel" is an english word and comes from the Catholic church ... "Infidel (literally "one without faith") is an English word meaning "one who doubts or rejects central tenets of a religion or has no religious beliefs", especially in reference to Islam. In Christianity the term was traditionally used by the Roman Catholic Church to refer to one who did not believe in the divinity of Jesus, knowingly held beliefs that contradicted Catholic dogma, or one who had not been baptized, or by Christians in general to describe non-Christians or those perceived as enemies of Christianity, including Muslims. Current English speaking Catholic ecclesiastical usage however distinguishes between non-Christians and non-believers (persons without religious affiliations or beliefs). The Arabic word kafir (literally the one who "covers", in the sense of hiding) is the Muslim term for an infidel. The term technically applies only to atheists and polytheists and to those who subscribe to faiths other than Christianity, Judaism and Zorastrianism." And more briefly ... infidel (plural infidels) 1. A non-believer of a certain religion 2. One who does not believe in a certain principle 3. One with no religious beliefs. Etymology - First attested 1460, from Latin infidelis unfaithful, from in- not + fidelis faithful (see fidelity). So as you can see the word has today been "hijacked" by some in the english-speaking Muslim world to refer to non-muslims, but the word originally meant non-christians. > If infidels are the converse of Muslims and gentiles the converse of Jews, > what is the converse of Christians? Many words have been used .. pagans & heathens are two such words which date back to the roman empire. Those words originally meant someone who lived in the country and had no implications for religious belief. In the later years of the empire, the country areas were the last bastions of the pre-christian religions and so the terms for "country dwellers" came to synonymous with non-christians. And see above ..."infidel" also means non-christian. > Has anyone ever implied that there is a right and a wrong pronoun for use > with Almighty God? Is it then a sin to use any particular pronoun that an > established Church regards as inappropriate? No, there's no sin. Traditionally the male pronoun has been used but not, as I said before, because God is male, but because there is no asexual gender pronoun and it is, well, impolite for a being. > In regard to hiring of that hall: MSFC is probably almost pure atheist. Infidels. :) > I must find out more about how they got to use it so much. MSFC may be mostly infidels, but the appreciation of SF&F is not limited to infidels. > However Jeff is doing a good job here - carry on.
