Most mythological creatures have suffered a similar fate and not always at the hands of homo celluloidus. Elves today are the sickenly "cute" helpers of santa. True, that's a more recent debasement. A classic pre-20th century debasement would be the leprechauns of Ireland who were once the sidhe, an race of immortal warriors and magicians somewhere between humanity and the gods. By Victorian times they had been reduced to the level of pixies that frolicked in the fields at night, drank saucers of milk and cleaned your boots if you left them at the door. A far cry from a race that the early Irish were in awe and fear of. cheers, David > http://www.disneyfairies.com/?completes the job that Tinker Bell the > Movie (thankfully never reaching the theatres, only released on > DVD) started, ie the demolition of fairies as any kind of > ultramundane imaginary being. Is that a Carrollian portmanteau word composed of abhorrence and abomination? I like it! While I won't dignify Disney with unqualified praise, yet I must say that the early full length animation movies, especially Fantasia (but not the sequel) impressed me. Most of them avoided the "cartoon violence" that characterises Warner Bros. Lady and the Tramp is my favourite. That was, I think, the only one that didn't take a well known story (it was a menage of two stories). It did, of course, portray dogs as human but in a way that was both fun and in a sense dignified. With "Fantasia", Disney kick-started the firm, now huge and not as good as it was once, Hewlett-Packard. In San Jos?'s "The Tech" a museum of technology largely aimed at children, there is a picture of the garage door behind which Hewlett and Packard started their business. Their first big commission was from Disney to design equipment for doing the animation in Fantasia. My father once "worked for the mouse" in that he was in an advertising agency that handled Disney business. He had a bit to do with a competition they held to mark the opening of Disneyland in 1955. --- On Wed, 3/6/09, dryad wrote: I view anything disney-fied as an abhorration. Mulwala makes less sense than Hume if you're considering the potential harm that the blue-green algae (cyanophytes to the botanical snobs) can do downstream. However it's not my call. Oh btw I realise that NSWers are called "cockroaches" because it was an illogical extention of "cockie" which was an epithet for those of NSW because some of them happen to be farmers. As Banjo Paterson put it "There came a stranger, a cockatoo The word means "farmer" as all men know Who live in the land where the kangaroo Barks loud at dawn, and the white eyed crow Uplifts his song to the stockyard fence As he watches the lambkins passing hence" Someone who knows more about kangaroos than I do told me: "They snuffle or cough loudly but I wouldn't call it a bark." Senecio is, I will add, a plant genus. Species of Senecio are very common, indeed you find them nearly everywhere. However, Senecio has a unique attribute.... - Herendil --- On Sun, 7/6/09, Jeff Lynch wrote: No Ted .....not the Hume (up the hume highway)...to Benella and then by a country road to Yarrawonga-Mulwala? and not letting b g algae go (from Lake Mulwala) , no, no,yes but they are trying to allow the b g a dry (out of the water) and let frosts kill it off......so legend around Yarrawonga has it.....You might confirm or deniythe science of it one (senecio) jeff cannot be related to Seneca but will be related to semester and also to sennight I assume? Also of course it is firmly entrenched in Sydney and I regard Slessor as the definitive Sydney poet. Because of the Songs of a Sentimental Bloke, I rather think of C. J. Dennis as the definitive?Melbourne poet. However, as far as I know, neither city has a large?performance space?named after either, although there is of course that painting called "Five Bells" in the foyer of the Sydney Opera House, but the Brisbane equivalent? has a large and opulent centre for performing arts. Personally I would place Judith Wright as overall a better poet than either Slessor or Dennis (as well as having a hand in starting Meanjin) and I entirely agree with the naming of their arts centre after her. Sadly she lost favour in her declining years by battling the cockies of Braidwood. ? I won't quote Judith Wright (though?I can) but I will quote two Dennis quatrains from the last chapter of the Bloke (I've used normal rather than phonetic spellings as I find it hard to remember just what spelling Dennis used) ? You live, you love, you learn, and when you come To square the ledger in some thoughtful hour, The everlasting answer to the sum Must always be "where's sense in getting sour?" ? and ? Life's what you make it, and the bloke who tries To grab the shining stars from off the skies Goes crook on life and calls this world a cheat And tramples on the daisies at his feet. Message-ID: <132684.53926.qm@web110208.mail.gq1.yahoo.com> Hi Elise. Personally I prefer the Holmes of my own imagination. Rathbone rather stereotyped the part and I thought his manner was just too cocksure - after all Holmes did make mistakes (in two cases - The Five Orange Pips and The Dancing Men - they cost a life). As for Sir Arthur (Conan Doyle, that is, certainly not Sullivan whose life I know a little more about), I haven't ever been into his private life, although I have read that it was sordid at times. Have you seen stuff concerning his alleged poisoning of Fletcher Robinson, as well as stealing the plot of the Hound from him? If anyone didn't recognise my quote - it was some of the last spoken words attributed to Sherlock Holmes by his true author. The words were spoken on the eve of World War 1, hence the rather gloomy prognosis. --- On Sun, 14/6/09, dryad wrote: Ted, ? I always was of the opinion that (with major exceptions) his verse work irritated me..but not so the man's drawings.a cute mixture of naive associations......an unreal reality sense of a place or and a time of his own making.the art work really seems to me to make sense of his own mind-created world(s). If they need to replace the ball for any of the weekend games you could offer it as a fair substitute. Not because the ball may be worth about $130, but because they both should be able to bounce...ha ha. 4 degrees! What is that my friends. I have been in beautiful Christchurch the last few days and my car thermometer recorded 0 degrees C. I took a photo with my phone but I'm still working out how to transfer them to the PC so I can show you. As well as that I have some shots of the spellbinding southern alps. The mountains and valleys were like storm-waves, the darkest green, and frozen in time. With a dusting of snow-white ice you can imagine how beautiful it must have looked. We flew quite low over them and it must rank as one of the most scenic ascents of all. The next step for the Seminar is to conjure, cement and certify a title and theme. I have a few working ideas but nothing that stokes my core. Maybe we should just run with 'Talkin about Tolkien' or 'Force of Hobbit' (get it?). Or maybe something to do with the history (in any sense) of Middle-earth, and its relevance to today. Or maybe 'The Humanity of Tolkien's world' or 'Tolkien's Vision'. I don't mind the latter as it's quite open to various interpretations. Anyway, tell me what you're thinking while I dust off my Tolkien books. I still haven't read the latest release but I do now have a copy. Have you read it Ted? We had a day recently where that was the max. Fairy King land sometimes doesn't get over 0 all day in the winter, but Brenda Lyon grows fine daffodils at her farm (Falkirk) there. As for the South Island, yes I can imagine it as Caradhras. A title or theme for the seminar? Have we got anything that's especially relevant to current events? I can't think of anything offhand, but I'd be thinking about Aussiecon and Melbourne, plus such things as world economy, swine flu, Iran and North Korea making bombs ... or should I ignore those things? I would, however. like to make some connection with Aussiecon. You may find that people already registered to go to it are interested in Tolkien (other than Elise, about whom we know). I'll happily pass on anything to the Aussiecon committee. Michael, I've so far only browsed Sigurd and Gudrun. It's by no means an easy read - not the sort of thing you can take to bed at night. I've been pondering the general question of "fairies" including elves dwarves etc and I've again carefully read Tolkien's "On Fairy-stories", coming up with a few more thoughts. I'm sure that there are aspects of Tolkien study that deserve more attention and they include some of the material that Peter covered in his BA Hons thesis (which is well worth another look if you haven't read it in a while). Oh, btw, the 2010 World Fantasy Convention is to be held in Columbus, Ohio, USA in late October 2010 and I'm thinking about going to it, for a variety of reasons. Even the hardened street-wise bloke could show a soft side, and indeed fall in love, but the path of true love never runs smooth and it took a few adventures before Bill's desires were fulfilled and he could relax and philosophise. As the weather is a trifle boring today I won't give you local report......but a report from Hobbiton......tis mowing time agin in Hobbiton and the local cricket side is a little wary of this weeks' coming game at the oval. And the reason is not hard to fathom. Sam Gangee hurt is arm....a branch of a tree fell down on him while he and that damn fool Hobbit master of his who had never been the same since he went of and got himself mixed up with Gandalf the crazy oldfireworks man and all round meddler in things(often dragon things) which ought not concern him at all....apparently it seems that the little idiot hobbit-master let go of the rope holding the branch at the wrong time Ah ti stypical of the cack handed fellow although he's still rervered here by most (he's not my favourite...but you all know why!....and Sam Gangee suffered an extremely bruised arm....it is in a sling other wise we all know that he'd still front up. Alsopp Bottomsafe is to take Sam's place..a left handed opener, he's been in the old master's shadow for two seaons now......at least the low with his left hand seamers too. Any old hows, Sam will not be keeping wicket or batting or even sending down his googlies this saturady. He will of course be seen coaching his boys (he is the Captain afterall) from the safety of the pub. Do not fvear Hobbiton's team is still good enough to win the gams against the 'Bottoms' and the folks from The Green....as their pub is abbreviated to must be sure to be on their mettle to win sure enough. The weather is plumb hot and the beers are running hot out of the barrels in the cellars of nights too.... Sam's beauty of a wife is of course expecting their fourth child very soon, so the lay olff might still bring a benefit to this number two family of the district. Sam is the mayor too of course. Butthen you already knew that odds are at even money ....Hobbiton to beat 'The Green'....Green at 2 to 1.... odds on to win A few greedy Hobbiton punters at the pub are known to have gone for the t'other team...I think that they will fall on their arses privately....excuse my French. Gammagee, ..as reporter (sport adn social life events) of The Hobbiton Dragonspreader, Yesterday I told of the necessary omission of Sam from the Hobbiton team...cricket team of course....today I have news of a considerable scandal......This concerns the (sensational) banning of the Sarehole Cricket Club from the competition. The Green man team (the Greens as they are known locally)..... hadn't really meant the incident (which admittedly they did report to Asbendidi Crowlock, the secretary of the Shire and Easts Cricket League) to have so many legs. It's a sixer ewhen we only meant to tickle the ball down to fine leg for a three perhaps, if we was lucky (their vice captain told me this).....but the thing has now gotten completely out of hand. I do not intend to tell all the tale....That would get too many fine people into more strife(mostly with their wives and girlfriends) but the incident (as I will refer to it from now on DOES refer to the giving out of the Green Man's Captain.....in other words Victor.S. Tumpinghole the third. He was finally given out by the (relieving umpire....the well known and highly respected Dr Wherely.P. Uppingshires from the fine holey house by the Mere .....close by the Green Man pub under an old but rarely applied ruling of the Rules of Cricket. The good Doctor was to be the last man batting for The Green Man team and because the regular umpire Holley.Bitum. Worthytum was incapacitated by Hay Fever...it being the height of the hay mowing and all...the good Doctor stood in for the good umpire...so well known in all his judgements over these many long years in the competition. It seems that Mr Victor .S. Tumpinghole the third, was somewhat ensconced in the Green Man pub when the runout of Harada. Shirleybotts was made..........The captain of the team (ie Victor) was to take block as the next man in...I mean Victor. P. Tumpinghole the third. We all know him better as that fine farner of Hops and mealy doses at Sarehole. Well to cut a long strory to just a mildly long yarn........Victor was a little too exposed to the lovely drop in The Green Man (or so some folks did say)......He did not get himself out of the grog place quite in time enow ..,.....and the fact of the matter is that he was given out by (the honest) Dr who adjudged him 'out' under the rule of 'failure to take wicket.' This is the ruling which states that a batsman is to be given so many minutes to take guard for the bowler to commence a delivery at him. Thus he was given out and all the fuss started....or ie The Game was ended...... there and then..... and well as I hinted at before..... a lot was said that should not have been and a lot more was done that was excrable and not to put too fine a point on it, was both illegal, dangeous and possibly unsporting.......Now I've taken your time up quite enow for the moment.....I do have to get a deeper report from both sides of 'the incident.' I promise you honourably that this fearless reporter of The Hobbiton Dragonspreader will return next week for ..wait for it..The Judgement of The League and the outcomes ....or the fallouts if you prefer, from the incident. I will say that two of the wives of the men have declared that they will not wash their men's cricket clothes again...and that's final. Yours more less sincerely...... Jacobady. S. I'd suggest a note to the right person in Aussiecon 4 publicity (I'll make sure of just who that right person is) so as have the info on the Aussiecon 4 web page. Regarding the suggested titles: - Unplugged - what would he otherwise be plugged into? I'm mystified by that one. - Through the ages? The ages of Middle-Earth or recent real ages? If you could think of a better word or words to cover the period from 1954 to now I think there would be value in that. I recall hearing a certain misguided person at Con Jos? (worldcon 2002) saying that she thought Tolkien's works were now "dead". Then there was China Mi?ville's comments about Tolkien and "consolation" (to him: "mollycoddling"). Then this slim biography by Michael Coren, who points out that, despite a lot of literary snobs disliking the fact, LotR is still the most popular book in the last 100 years. It justifies some erudite discussion about just where Tolkien's works now stand in the whole area of fiction and especially the smaller domain of speculative fiction. - Not sure about mythology, modernity and orcs. For me it conjures up images of orcs dressed in the latest fashions, which seems completely incongruous. Did you have a more pertinent idea regarding that? I see that Elise likes it, especially when paraphrased "myth, mod, monster". Perhaps she sees something that I've missed. - The Good the Bad and the Ugly bothers me a bit too. In Middle Earth I get the feeling that the bad and the ugly are one and the same, as are the good and the "fair". - Certainly the Quest was a journey. I guess that Tolkien's own journeys were important to his literary output too, but on the whole it seems only to touch the edge of the field open to a Tolkien seminar. As you would gather from the above comments, I favour the notion of "through the ages" provided that "ages" is qualified suitably. Even then I would hope that papers off this topic but firmly connected to Tolkien would be eligible for presentation or at least for selection to be presented. I've been reading a bit more of Sigurd and Gudrun. I see that the legend of Sigurd is the source that Wagner mined for his Ring operas. That put the story in a bit more perspective for me. It doesn't matter if one interprets this as Middle-earth time or real time. It could relate to anything from poetry to plot. However, I hear what you're saying and perhaps most people would interpret it the same way as you. > - Certainly the Quest was a journey. Now I've hard at work researching the Shire Cricket League.....there is the small difficulty that during "The Scourging of The Shire period some of the records were lost.....but luckily the old newspapers of The Dragonspreader...published in Bywater are to hand.....not yet put to disc though......................... It seems that there were (prior to the adventure years) ten cricket teams in the league. Some (the bigger towns) like Bywater, Hobbiton and Frogmorton you would (have) expected....but still there were (at least to me) a few surprises........Scary had a team as did Needlebotom!!!!! The ten (teams meant of course that no bye was needed.).....that was good wasn't it? After the adventure years two teams could no longer field a team....Scary was one of those...... and another team came into the league ...meaning that there were now only nine teams. Of course that meant a weekly bye....... Now of course many teams were based around the local pubs pubs such as The Green Dragon @ Bywater The Ivy..(on the Hobbiton side of Bywater)....full name being of course The Ivy Bush.....and at Frogmorton....south of The Water (a lake) was The Floating Log.....in fact five teams sprang from these three pubs (at various times)....a few of the more rural teams(such as Needlebottom) were naturally farmer based teams....examples are Scary and Needlebottom and indeed Scary did not even possess a ground of their own. Those folks who can remember back a long way to my Shires verse piece may remember that the greatest player by a long shot was Sam G.....as(in former days was his Father the Gaffer) Now I do believe that I've also come across the full fixture of The shire league for at least three years...........and wait for it I intend to publish in full the local cricket commentator 's (reporter I mean )...accounts of the weekly matches.....or at least highlights as seen by a contemporaray of Sam Gamgees.....this by (A FORMER CRICKET PLAYER HIMSELF) who published extensively in the Dragonspreader....he was it must be said a rather garrulous and opioned commentator and a former rival of the great Sam Gamgee.... (this reporter Captained a team at the height of his powers and was once a demon fast bowler.....not to be missed) keep tuned..... love jeff From jeffreyblynch at gmail.com Mon Jun 29 09:01:39 2009 From: jeffreyblynch at gmail.com (Jeff Lynch) Date: Mon, 29 Jun 2009 09:01:39 +1000 Subject: [TolHarndor] Fairy King gets fairy dust In-Reply-To: <849222.12929.qm@web110201.mail.gq1.yahoo.com> References: <849222.12929.qm@web110201.mail.gq1.yahoo.com> Message-ID: Dear all, Now (to those who've not fallen asleep.....I mentioned 3 pubs as being influencial in Cricket affairs in the Shire .......
