Having been forced to sit thru' several of these sorts of shows (my wife 
in her great 'wisdom' enjoys them), they would specifically want to have 
someone with poor social skills. The whole point of these shows is to

Rozzie somehow tracked one of these down in a St Vincent de Paul shop, and paid the princely sum of $5 for a copy in almost as new condition. It has some interesting stuff in it, text as well as photos. They have more than just the Tolkien family; I see that there's a picture of Vera Chapman, founder of the Tolkien Society (though they don't mention her much used and honoured soubriquet of Belladonna Took).

When I told her (Rozzie) that today was the (36th) anniversary of the death of JRRT she gave it to me. She was holding it back until either Fathers' Day or my birthday (a couple of weeks later). I've only just had time to browse through it.

Jeff, would you please spell out for me where the planned venue for the seminar is? Preferably with some indication of how a person can get there from the city. I'm considering options for accommodation. Perhaps a little out of Melbourne will be all right but I'd like to be able to get to and from the con venue at any time of day. Ah, I have fond memories of the light rail system in San Jos?, which ran a service once per hour even in the wee smalls. What's public transport like in Melbourne at 3 am? What are the streets like? Dangerous?

That's a great find! Is it a first edition? I've seen copies of it selling
for US$200 plus. I've never seen a copy myself but I'm sure it would offer
some interesting insights to him as a family man.

Ted..venue is The Pacoe Vale Hotel...............Pascoe Vale.
.....I will be placing Google style references up to you......via David and
the TH site........Davy.....who knows how to put these things in place.
There IS a railway station only some 90 metres from the venue.....it sits by
the Tullamarine freeway....from Airport that is......and is but a street or
two from another major road (for motorists obviously) This is Pascoe Vale
Road.....in general.......it is in Pascoe Vale...say three kilometres North
of West Brunswick...I fancy having an early breakfast at my flat (unit2/78
Pearson Street) in West Brunswick.....inviting other folks to same and then
drive them the 3 or 2 ks to the venue.......it is just that near and simple
for me to offer that!
Wait and see what David can give us in the way of Maps....Ralway line is the
Mooneee Ponds........ Essendon line

The copy I have looks as if it could well be a first edition; there's nothing on the inside front page to indicate that there have been previous editions. The publisher is Harper Collins and the date 1992. I hadn't looked closely at it when I got your letter, I now see that there is quite a lot of text in it, so I'll get back to you when I've read that. Anyway, your birthday is now past so you can't say to me "It'sss my birthday and I wantsss it!" :)

Thanks Jeff. I found it on the Google maps. I also found train timetables. Looks like you can get back to the city from Pascoe Vale on trains up to 11pm+ every 30 minutes on Saturdays. Please correct me if that's wrong.

I could not agree more with this. Evidence bears out that he was deeply in love with Edith and even the sight of her influenced his epic 3x (Thingol/Melian, Beren/Luthien, Aragron/Arwen)--each were versions of the meeting of the other person....each time the woman was something "other' and mysterious and non-mortal.

I also concer with the assessment of Boys Own and Girls Own. However, look at Nancy Drew in conjunction with the Hardy Boys. They are there to solve mysteries--both are. That may be a newer idea since women's lib and all.

Tolkien
seems to have written much of his work in the British 1930's and 1940's
"Boys Own" style, albiet with added layers. That means the stories are
basically rollicking adventure yarns. Boys Own stories did not have
romance in them ... that was the province of the Girl's Own stories ..
and never shall the twain meet. Women appeared in Boys Own stories, but
they were always part of the background, never central or even
secondary characters. Central characters were always boys or young men.
Hence the hobbits who were always 'boys', no matter how old they were.
As in Boys Own fiction, the secondary characters were strong adult male
role models, such as Gandalf, Aragorn, Elrond and co. Legolas and
Gimli, being non-humans are part of the scenery, and even they they
tend to behave like boys rather than adults. Older boys, but still
boys. They are not adult role models.

South Eastern Europe until just afore the TH con @2010.

Been reading the Planet book of Austria....I do note that Austrians seem to
claim the Neiderlung stories as their own................Professoer do they
have a very good case for this claim.assuming that Lonely Planet has the

staying over for a few days to celebrate the passing of years gone and the
years to be. Should be fun!

I think there is some solid evidence for this claim of the Austrians.
According to my penguin copy it was written for performance at court in
Austria somewhere between Vienna and Passua. I'm not sure how they know this
but I am willing to give this one to the Austrians. ;-)

stating.....from the (12th) century...and probably from Austria.

Another glorious day here in Yarrawonga
I guess we'd like to linger longer.
But this will wait until late this summer
When the cod will know I'm coming
In my tinnie I will trawl

I do hope this to be a winner
A fifty pounder would be dandy
An a sixty even handier
but no catch is ok too

It's clear from "The Tolkien Family Album" that JRR was a much loved and much loving husband and father. Humphrey Carpenter did at one point in his biography rather harp on his "man's man" image, citing his numerous attendances at all male gatherings, the best known being of course the Inklings. However even Carpenter allowed that there was an ethos about the all male thing in Britain, and especially in Oxford, that transcended homosexuality.

Re Michael...Yes I 've read The Woman in White...strange but a tiny bit
compelling, so it is......dated a wee bit mayhaps too.....
I think it influenced a lot of writers too....
Re Walton...........Walton lived in the town that Sam Johnson grew up
in.....in the better part of the Midlands.Damn it but i've forgotten the
town.I have been there...compleat mit wife!
THere is a canal runs through the middle of the town..just right for
FISHING...
.....Michael asks ...When should a man go fishing....The answer is
obvious......  and he already knows the answer......if you feel you have to
ask.....(when).then don't!
Fishing......only problem with fishing is when you catch a
fish!....Hey......Remembered Walton and Sam's town....Lichfield....nice
Cathedral there too!

Hi Jeff. I was going to remark a little while ago that if you say Wien you should say 

?sterreich. I presume it will be fairly cold over there in the next few months. You'll probably even see Schnee!

Actually, btw, we didn't see any smoke despite the fact that the HRB was going on just up the road. The wind must have been blowing from the west rather than north west which is more common.

Give a wave to Cynthia when you get there. She's enroute to southern  
Germany at the moment. Catching up with a friend who'se living there  
for 6 months (but lives here) for a few weeks and then onto London to  
spend a few more weeks with her daughter. Lucky me, working in an  
instutition of the educational variety cannot get that sort of time  
off outside of term ... so I stay home, water the plants, feed the dog  
and pay the bills. :(

Weather ... well there's weather here. There's always weather, but it  
can seak for itself this time. :/

You are 2 hours ahead of Sydney time (or 22 hours behind) since the time 
stamp was 4:45pm.

Most likely you're in NZ, which is 2 hours ahead of AEST. -22 hours 
would put you somewhere in the Pacific, just east of the date line. 
Unlikely. The tremors reference supports this .. unless you're on the 
set for the Z-grade move, Tremors 6. :)

Temp for Auckland, according to google, is 13C with winds from the SW at 
11km/h. Wellington is the same, tho' the wind is a bit brisker at 21kph. 
The later is perhaps a bit too strong to qualify as a zephyr, so I'd say 
you were in Auckland, or somewhere near there with near identical 
weather. But anything more specific than NZ would be a tad speculative.

   Spot on! The City of Sails is where I'm at, well at least for  
another couple of hours. No time to see any of the sites  
unfortunately....maybe next time.

   Did you know that the go ahead has been given for The Hobbit movie.  
New Line Cinema and The Tolkien Estate (and publishers) settled their  
differences. Apparently, they too will be filmed here in New Zealand.  
Two films - no doubt with their own extended versions to come.

I haven't consciously seen the word on an Austrian stamp; I did German for four years at school. I never learned how to construct a German sentence, but some of the words stuck.

Quite right too Ted ...even in German.......there can be no smoke but (many)
mirrors...that's if your not having a cigar......Hmmm.you have given me a
good idea for a short story Ted.
Nein not... done any of the things(places) that you mentioned...I've been up
with( the two trains) which take you up Germany's highest mountain.....you
start off on a normal but kleiner train and then swap over to a cog
train...it goes over the ground at first and then buries itself into
tunnels...winding around (inside) the mountain until...voila you are near
the top...I  tink I told youse all of this magical trip once afore...the
last 500 metres ....if you want to go (i did not) is by cable car.
I've stayed at Berestchgarten......in the wonderful valley below The Eagles
Eirie(or lair)....vis a vis Mr Shicklegruber.........visited the real
beaut anti Nazi Museum there up in the mountains....sailed on the
Konginsee....not far from that place too
Saltzburg und seen der puppets do The Magic Flute..wunderbar too it vas.....
und Kochel am See
und Munchen
Und of course the little jewel
of Zurich........
und gone on another magical train ride....truly inspiring.....normal track
but winding back on itself so many times...the train from zurich to St
Moritz.....no kidding it was early spring und I hear der cuckoo sing in der
walds
I also met Superwoman there......from Washington DC.we are still in email
contact after some 12 years....
I wnat to visit Graz this time and some of the (mountain underbelly) of
Austria...need to do more homework.....but no time as yet....I am hoping to
go on (the new) A380 Airbus Industrie aircraft..maybe with Lufthansa from
Singapore...I wish!

Well I understand that m...(BIG M)....fishing ....... it's all a state of
mind.......

l have been in the process of writing a work...entitled....The Water, The
Water.
It is kinda about me...... my dad and water...I was nearly killed by my
dad.....he
ran his boat....called The Kontiki into the bridge.at Yarra......or under it
really.......I had the athletic ability...(best and fairest...err...equal b
and f for Mulwala Footy club....1965)..... to flip myself off the boat just
before the boat bumped into ALL the stanchions on the way through..........I
'm a lad who has seen many Murray Cod hanging up in his back yard (at
Yarra) .....I have never caught one though...
I intend to do so!

As I've already said...I think....I'm going fishing...for the Cod in late
summer......at Yarrawonga...at the Ovens and Murray junction to be
precise......I have 3.1 Stacer (aluminium tinnie).....this driven by a two
stroke British Seagull outboard motor...a great engine.........then off to
Austria.then back for our CON...
It's good isn't it?......IMy hope is to go to and back to and from Singapore
on the new A380!!!!!!! Airbus......!!!!!!!!!!!!!

   Did Hobbits dabble in astrology? I know they engaged with the night  
sky but I don't know to waht extent. It occurred to me today that both  
Frodo and Bilbo were born under the sign of Virgo, although only just.

Astrology is on my mind too. Today the Sun entered the constellation of Libra and we are reminded of the balance: how Belshazzar was found wanting, while Shylock was constrained not to take more than a hair's weight above his owed pound of flesh. I'm not even sure he had a part of a plan, yet he managed to improvise as he went and when the final crunch came it was his firm adherence to his beliefs that mattered most. Which would you rather? The book was "Paul Sorensen - Master Gardener" by Richard Ratcliffe, and it's been out of print since 1990 when a small print run sold out within weeks. Part of our land is a Sorensen garden. If you ever encounter Christine Stevenson, say hi from me.

Oh, and eels to win in Sydney next week. Rozzie came from Parramatta.

However, I can send non-attachment e-mails and have no issue receiving
e-mails with attachments or not. 

I turned off my Norton Anti-virus software but that made no difference. I
will speak to my provider tomorrow but I've had this problem for a week now.
Any suggestions? 

PPS. Did you all hear about the discovery of the Anglo-Saxon treasure trove
in the former kingdom of Mercia?

That's an outlook error message. From the MS website:

This message may occur if Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Outlook Express 
cannot establish a connection with your e-mail server. These error 
messages are frequently caused by one of the following:
* You are not connected to the Internet or a network, or your mail 
server is temporarily unavailable.
* Your account settings are incorrect.
* Your user profile in Outlook is damaged.
* An e-mail item on your POP3 server is damaged.
* The configuration of your AV software is incorrect.
* Outlook Express was removed from the computer or the installation is 
damaged.
* The configuration of your personal firewall software is incorrect.

No clear fix, but I did find a few people posting to forums in the last 
week with the same problem as you .. and with the same mail server 
(activ8.com.au). One suggestion was to delete your email account in 
outlook and then recreate it. That wont affect your address book or 
archived email .. just the connection settings.

Another fix would be to dump outlook and use another email programme. :)

corrupted). You'd need to export your address book beforehand and copy 
your mail archive (the .pst file) and then import them back in once it's

Since fish and computers have nothing to do with the weather, I'll bring 
this back on track ...

Currently 15.5C outside with a brisk westerly blowing at an average of 
40kph, gusting up to 55kph. Clear skies with no trace of cloud. Humidity 
is low, around 25-30%.

A drastic change from the mid 30'sC we were getting here only last week! 
Had a trace of another dust storm yesterday .. noticeable looking in the 
distance and when looking at outside surfaces that had been cleaned 
since the previous one.

What does IT think of CA anti-virus etc. My local bloke (Lithgow) recommends it but I have suspicions regarding certain aspects of its operation.

I use Eudora Pro 4, which is, I'll admit, a bit out of date, but all mail storage is in plain text, unlike Outlook Express.

Yesterday that ruddy Fairy King got more fairy dust! We got a speck (but I took pictures of it anyway).

Regarding the inscription on the ring: was it something like "Property of New Line Cinema"?

Thanks, MEWB. Here it's currently giving 2 degrees a nudge, but down to 1.5 overnight. Winds slacking off now and sky clearing. Bushfire danger very high and threatening to stay that way (but that also applies to Sydney and the central Coast).

Ted,

I use CA myself. I'm not entirely happy with everything about it and the 
customer service is poor these days .. but it offers daily updates and 
it seems to do a good job of protecting computers. It's also not a 
resource hog, so having it does not noticeably slow down your computer 
like some other AV software, such as nortons. I have a corporate package 
from symantec at work which was installed recently .. and there is a 
noticeable performance degrading ever since it was installed.

CA also installs cleanly and uninstalls cleanly .. to uninstall just run 
a single uninstall from the add/remove programmes in the control panel, 
reboot .. and all traces are gone. Some other AV software, on the other 
hand, can be incredibly hard to remove, depending on the system you may 
need to reformat the hard drive & reinstall the OS to remove an AV 
package I've mentioned above (hence it often being referred to as a 
virus). Not always ... but, for instance, with Nortons, you have to run 
several uninstallers from the add/remove programmes and even after that, 
you have to download a special programme from their website to remove 
additional parts of the nortons package which cannot be removed using 
the uninstaller that is added when you install it originally. Removing 
it with the vista version of nortons seems a little bit cleaner - I 
recently bought a new laptop which came with it bundled and I only had 
to run 3 or 4 uninstallers from add/remove to get rid of almost all of 
it .. tho' when I looked in the registry, there were still traces which 
I removed manually.

What issues do you have with CA? Kaspersky Labs (I think that is the 
right spelling) has a good rep, so that's another you could use.

Remember, you need to have a commercial firewall, antivirus and 
antispyware. CA does have a security package which bundles all three 
together, tho' I don't use that since I have a dedicated 
hardware/software firewall setup. If I didn't, I'd use the combo package.

CA is very user friendly and operates pretty silently. Daily updates are 
not too sizable and about the only user attention that it prompts you 
with is to do an occasional quick anti-spyware scan since I don't have 
the scheduled scan selected (if I did I liekly would not get even that 
reminder). Scheduled scans slow down the system and I like to pick when 
I scan since I do a lot of recording off foxtel and a scheduled scan 
would hash the recording, which is resource hungry.

The two main bugs I have with CA is that it is too user friendly, so for 
a computer geek like me, it is not very adjustable .. but most AV/AS 
software is going that way these days. 2ndly I've heard that it does not 
automatically scan flash drives when inserted. That was for an older 
version, so may be fixed in the current version ... but I never assume 
the auto-scan with any external media and always scan something before I 
access it. I suspect this is fixed since since last year you could get a 
version that ran off a USB drive so it'd be silly for the hard drive 
version not to automatically scan when a USB is inserted.

Another plus for CA .. it's based on the VET AV package which was 
developed here in OZ.

With virus technology the way it is today you really need to have an up 
to date emailer to reduce potential security issues .. the older the 
emailer, the more security flaws it would have.

If you want to stick with eudora, upgrade to the current version 
(http://www.eudora.com/download/). The mozilla suite also stores email 
in text format and you can import all eudora settings and stored mail 
into mozilla software (there's an import option). You may want to 
consider thunderbird rather than seamonkey .. the later is more for 
computer geeks.

Eudora, as of version 8, is open source, so is free to acquire and use. 
Earlier versions are also free now, but you don't get all the extras 
with the free install version (pre v.8).

I watched the game Jeff - the only AFL game I watched all year. It was quite
the finish. I do hope the Eels win by a greater margin this Sunday.

Thanks David. I followed your advice and something worked eventually. It's
still not 100% as I have to send the e-mail with the attachment several
times before it will get through. Maybe my PC is ill and is slowly
recovering.

It's dear enough (@ 1800 euros) but when one considers that it would be
approx the same as ........at the lower end that is..........you save by
having your own cooking facilities......und have a small flat to
yourself.......an a kind of........personality and not just a fly by nite
tourist fellow image....Ja?
This am I came a little closer to renting out my own apartment for a short
time (next year).......to offset the cost of Vienna that is.....an Italian
boy called Tony has a unit in the same block as me........in Pearson St...he
reckons that he just may have a renter for me..........we will see.

Currently 13C here .. due to reach 30ish by the end of the day. Well  
mid arvo .. by the end of the day I daresay it will have cooled down  
somewhat. Should reach the max about the time I'll be wandering the  
streets heading from a carpark to see a specialist about my cough.  
Wonderful ....

As for Germany .. Cynthia is currently there and is due to leave  
around 4pm this evening, Sydney/Melbourne time. Give or take a few  
hours. Next stop .. Paris. Well several train stations in between to  
change trains, but that doesn't really count, no?

PS: My thoughts and opinions on football .. are best not printed. :)

Your Vienna trip is starting to take shape. What's the green wine? I'm not
going anywhere as exotic but again I head off to Auckland today, returning
on Friday. Apparently it is raining there today.

Just about finished the Woman in White by Wilkie Collins. Highly recommended
if you are into 'Sensation' novels. I'm on the lookout for more of his

Ted....When (Wien) when I am ready ....in April 2010...sounds liek a  Sci Fi
novel Ted....
Well the negotiations go on (with Frau? Dagmar)....I made a boo boo....said
that the dough was too much for an ATM withdrwal...I've been there
before....sooo she reckons a deposit now ...half and half say.No good maybe
I will allow a third ..(deposit) say....I vill be a hard bargainier.Hey that
is a gut word too.
I promise I won't keep this up all the time..til next April I mean....

Ok....I take on board your rules reply..yep....I copy and agree!
greenwine.....in the wine valleys of Austria wine kellars hang out a green
bough......de temps en temps...this signals that their...(new) green wine is
now available
...
ditto at times for the town kellars (wine bars etc) wine kellars are the
heart of Austrian und Bavarian social life..best food wines beers und
eferytink.....( first experienced by moi in the year 1967)........horrible
bloody hangover the next morn......strong stuff is greenwine........

und Mathew Arnold...he was the head master of Rugby school....see Tom
Brown's School Days (novel)....and a poet........perhaps not a great poet
but kinda influential.tis said that Arnold invented (or) introduced RUGBY TO
RUGBY SCHOOL.....Ted knew of the quote ...see 'The wolves came down....'
We are culture (or Kultur) vultures are Ted and I M!
