However I'm inclined to think that Jessica is confused by very little - the one thing, unfortunately for her - was spherical geometry and the fact that she did not complete a "true circumnavigation" because of this. Michael, when do you want a complete text of the talk? I offered to do either a short or a long version depending on your plans for the seminar's structure. I was reminded of that yesterday at Katoomba. They have an Aldi supermarket that opened only a few weeks ago. As you may know, Aldi supermarkets open at 9 am and they rely more heavily on the shoppers doing things that in other supermarkets the store staff do. At a couple of minutes to 9 there were about 15 people waiting for the doors to open, several (myself included) with shopping trolleys (which as you would appreciate take up quite a lot of room, and the entrance to Aldi is not very large compared with eg Coles across the road). At about one minute to 9, I thought I heard a click. This I would have expected, to allow the doors to open, but then they only open if the infrared beam is broken by a person or a trolley. The woman in the front of the queue - not really a queue, just people milling around, but the order of the shoppers' entry appeared quite well marked - I expected her to move up to the door and the door would then open. Well, she didn't move and neither did anyone else - they patiently waited for the doors to open. Perhaps I was wrong - she seemed to know what she was doing. So I waited for a couple of minutes. Nobody else stirred. Finally, not being particularly patient in this context, I left my trolley and went past the woman to the door. I didn't look at her - I thought she would probably think I was jumping the queue and she wouldn't like it. She didn't say anything nor did she move. So I kept on going right up to the door. I didn't say "mellon", but the doors opened anyway. The others all looked amazed, then started thanking me profusely, as they poured in through the door. On the side of the coin it's a > wonder some of them didn't experience the odd occasion of luxation.... A limited gene pool would have two effects ... initially it would lead to a whole mass of genetic disorders. Most of these would not be viable in the long term and after a sufficient number of generations these bad genes would be weeded out of the gene pool. Of course, some mutations would be viable and would result in a number of sub-species and possibly even different species. That's evolution after all. Morgoth aside, this could explain the origin of orcs as a sub-species of elves .. actually, orcs are often depicted as having a multitude of appearances, all less than appealing. Perhaps orcs are merely the elven genetic defectives resulting from a too-small gene pool? And akin to ancient societies who abandoned unwanted children out in the wilds (or wherever), perhaps the elven defectives were abandoned ... somewhere .. and collected by fellow defectives and raised as .. orcs. Of course some would be fertile (some not), so the 'defectives' would be a self-sustaining sub-species. But not a distinct species since there would be a continual influx of new 'defectives' from the elven parent race. But what of Morgoth? One could argue that if ME is analogous to Earth, then Morgoth was merely a figment of mythology, hence a different origin for the orcs would be required. Perhaps humans, dwarves & hobbits were also sub-species, albeit ones that were less disfigured. After all, elves & humans could interbreed & produce fertile offspring, so they were the same species. Oh, and the long term effect would be to weed out faulty genes and eventually you'd have a very small gene pool for the race, with very little variation ... every member would effectively be a biological clone, at least in terms of genetic variability (or lack thereof). With few, if any, faulty genes left, the usual problem with close kin having issue would no longer be a problem. cheers, David -- Line dancing, Genealogy, Travel, Photography, Local history & more! http://roots-boots.net mailto:dragon at roots-boots.net The greatest tragedy that could overcome a country would be for it to fight a successful war in defence of liberty and to lose its own liberty in the process" - Robert Menzies
